Sergio Scatizzi was born in 1918 in Gragnano, not far from Lucca, in the north of Tuscany; he grew up between Valdinievole and Lucca countryside.
In 1936 he moved to Rome where he got acquainted with Mario Mafai, Giovanni Stradone, Emanuele Cavalli, Antonietta Raphaël and other artists that belonged to the via Cavour group; in this period his style starts to take shape with its strong emphasis on colours and the sensations that colour can convey.
In Rome Scatizzi also met Filippo de Pisis, with whom started a deep and long friendship.
In 1941 he was called from the Italian army to Bologna, where he met Giorgio Morandi. In 1950 he was invited to the Venice Biennale and won the ‘Bagni di Lucca’ painting prize. He moved to Florence where he met Ottone Rosai and, through him, other artist and art historian such as Nino Tirinnanzi, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and Pier Carlo Santini.
He moved to Florence in an old mansard in Via de’ Federighi 3, from which he had a view of the cityscape that became subject of many of his paintings.
Between 1997 and 2009 three major personal exhibitions of Scatizzi paintings were organized in Florence, 2 in Palazzo Pitti and one in the Uffizi museum.
